Le développement technologique peut-il continuer indéfiniment : quelques citations célèbres

Dans son essai de 2007 intitulé « The Future of Humanity », Nick Bostrom rappelle que la question de la capacité de poursuivre indéfiniment l’évolution technologique actuelle de l’humanité se pose depuis plus de 60 ans :

• Le mathématicien Stanisłas Ulam en 1958 dans « John von Neumann 1903-1957 » :

  One conversation centered on the ever accelerating progress of technology and changes in the mode of human life, which gives the appearance of approaching some essential singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue.

• Le mathématicien Ivind John Good en 1965, dans « Speculations Concerning the First Ultraintelligent Machine », c’est-à-dire à propos de l’intelligence artificielle :

  Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion,’ and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make… It is more probable than not that, within the twentieth century, an ultraintelligent machine will be built…

• Le mathématicien Vernor Vinge, en 1993, dans « The Coming Technological Singularity » :

  Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly thereafter, the human era will be ended.

Il faut bien sûr aussi citer l’approche d’Alexandre Grothendieck et son discours de Genève. Autant les visions ci-dessus voient la science et la technologie comme inéluctables, autant Grothendieck identifie le progrès scientifique comme une idéologie propre qui rentre en contradiction avec « l’épanouissement de la Vie, dans toute sa richesse et sa variété » (*)
